The Holy Spirit Helps – John 16:1-15

6 10 2008

Not every time someone says, “I just felt the presence of the Holy Spirit.” is the Holy Spirit actually active.  I hear people says this at the strangest time.  Others times it is appropriate to say it and no one does.  People under deep conviction of sin do not generally leave the service saying, “Wow, the Holy Spirit was moving today.”

H. S. is helper because…

  • we will fall away without Him. v. 1

  • Even the disciples would fall away without the Holy Spirit.

  • We all need help constantly in all areas of the Christian life.  We cannot succeed without the Holy Spirit.

A wrong view of the Holy Spirit can lead to…

  • Disappointment – Can’t speak in tongues.

  • Thinking you’re saved when you’re not

  • Thinking He is active when he is not

  • Thinking He is not active when he is

A right view of the Holy Spirit leads to…

1. knowing Jesus -15:26 Worship

2. not falling away 16:1

3. Conviction of sin

  • There never has and never will be salvation without the Holy Spirit.

  • That is why it is a tragedy not to preach against sin

  • Preachers don’t preach for radical transformation any more.

  • It is this preachers prayer that your sin makes you sick.

  • John Bunyons sin made him sick.

  • Conviction of righteousness

  • He shows us we are not righteous

  • He shows us we need Jesus’ righteousness

  • Conviction of judgement.

  • know the truth 15:26, 16:13

To ignore the Holy Spirit is to say, “It is worth continuing in sin even if I have to go to Hell; even if I have to mock Jesus when I do it.”

  • There are no guarantees that the Holy Spirit keeps convicting.

  • There are no guarantees on life.
